    Wonderful staff, food and location

The hotel is a bit old but it is still extremely comfortable, the food is excellent and the small funicular to the onsen baths was fun.
The baths and the food were excellent. The location is spectacular and the attention to service provided by the attentive staff was second to none. The staff really made this hotel and I fully appreciated how they helped with one of my party being in a wheelchair. They were wonderful from start to finish. A lovely lady helped from the beginning and I really wish that I had noted her name. A wonderful experience with spectacular views. If you can see past the faded appearance of your room, you will truly appreciate this place. Also, great for the cable car that is very close and wel worth a ride to the top.

Their private onsen was beautiful and we were able to look at the full moon but we only had half an hour...which was probably enough as it was boiling. The hotel feels luxurious, we just felt out of place at no fault of the staff. We slept in so missed breakfast but their dinner was good, again out of our comfort zone, if you have dinner here make sure you wear the robes that they give you, we didnt know you could.

Check in time restricts to 3pm so if your bus reach here earlier then you have nothing to do but wait in lobby as all springs are in cleaning...Unfortunately my bus arrived in front of hotel at 11am...cannot image 3+ hours waiting... Besides, Japanese style of dinner is not tasty compared to its price.
Reception staff helpful and agree dinner share.

    Long commute

If you want to do anything in takayama, it's an hour and a half by bus. We were not aware of the distance when we booked it.
    Onsen was great.

    Fantastic hotel--highly recommended!

The pillow was a bit too firm. Otherwise it's 100% perfect.
This hotel is absolutely fantastic. It is such a gorgeous place in an incredible location. For those coming by public transport, there is the bus stop directly in front of the hotel. We stayed before Christmas, and they had beautiful decorations, a fire, and wonderful warm atmosphere. The room had an incredible view of snowy mountains. The baths were some of the best I've been to yet. Going down to the outdoor baths by the river was an experience, but nothing can compare to seeing the mountains and sitting in the steaming water as snow comes down.

    Beautiful scenery surrounds you.

The Japanese style rooms aren't as comfortable as what we are used to but it was still worth the experience.
The outdoor mixed onsen is amazing. The scenery is incredible. It was snowing around us as we went in and the experience was simply magical. The staff were very helpful despite the language barrier.

Not worth the price. Go down the road to Suimeikann Karukaya Sanso - same price better everything.

The staff (the old dude and woman at reception) were exceptionally difficult and rude because i was non-Japanese. (They said 'No early check in' - then checked in a Japanese couple 10 minutes later). They spoke extremely limited English and none of the documents/info was in English (despite getting English tourists come through often). The communal areas are all Smoking. The facilities (other than the internal/external Onsen) were super old - including the beds. The price was way overpriced for what you get - a single outdoor Osen.
The room heater system was great. Room is large, as is the bathroom (by Japanese standards) The outdoor Onsen was really lovely, with a great view. That's it though - nothing else of worth here.

Nice location but room given was rather old and dirty

Given an old run down room - carpet was rather old and dirty . Was very cold in the nite as we were not told about the heater switch that was hidden behind a panel near the wall. Could not find the heater in the nite and was too tired to ask for help as the male receptionist was rather unfriendly upon checking in ,as he does not speak English. He was rattling away in Japanese which we minimally understood anything! So we slept in the cold. Left a rather unpleasant experience this 2nd time stay here. No shuttle service provided in Autumn November period , told to use public transport.

Enjoyable hot pools in the mountains!

This is by no means a criticism but nobody spoke English so we had a hard time making ourselves understood and also understanding our hosts😂
Hotel was very nice.. we had a western bedroom plus bathroom and also made use of the public baths, the sepate gender as well as the mixed gender pool at night( I wore a sarong) but they do give for 300yen a short towel dress for the ladies! The meal was full kaiseki and although I do not really like all the pickles and food that I cannot identify (!) it was good and we had a lovely evening... breakfast was nice too( Japanese as well) The hotel is near the rope way and we had a nice drive from Takayama spending the day going up the mountain and lazing in the warm pools. Also this is not really a western tourist destination and Sept is a quiet month... really enjoyable !
